Thycaud Ayya

A Yogi, Social Reformer, and a GURU

Thycaud Ayya was an astute reformer who lived in the state of Kerala. He had umpteen numbers of disciples. Among them, Ayyan Kali, Chattampi Swamikal, and Narayana Guru were renowned revolutionists.

Early life

Ayya was born in Nakalapuram, Kerala in 1814. Though he was born in Kerala, his family had to flee to Tamil Nadu, due to the fear of Tipu Sultan’s attack.  His original name was Subbaraya Panicker. His disciples called him Sivaraja Yogi Ayya Swami Thiruvadigal. His friends called him Suprand Ayya.

His father, Muthukumaran was from Malabar and his mother, Rugmini Ammal was from Kollam. His grandfather Sri Hrishikesan and his father were Yogis too. Subbarayan looked after the family, after his father left to Kasi. He then married Kamalammal just to obey his Guru’s order. He had 3 sons and 2 daughters.

Two Tamil Saints Sachidananda Maharaj and Chitti Paradesi visited Ayya’s place frequently. They initiated spiritualism in Ayya when he was 12 years old. They took him along on their spiritual tours. It was during this time; Subbarayan had a chance to visit Singapore, Burma, African countries and Penang. From here, he acquired the knowledge of Yogic practices of the highest order.

Story behind the title Thycaud

After the spiritual tour, his guru instructed him to medidate in Kodungallor temple, Travancore, Kerala. During this time, the mother goddess appeared before him in his dreams. So, Ayya decided to spend the rest of  his life here.

During his stay, the then Maharaja of Travancore, Swathi Thirunal heard about Subbarayan and his powers and became his disciple. Maharaja made him the senior manager of Thycaud Residency. And then on Ayya was called as Thycaud Ayya.

Disciples of Ayya

Ayya delivered lectures in Jnanaprakasha Sabha more frequently. Swami found the famous “Saiva Prakasha Sabha” along with Sundaram Pillai in Thiruvanthapuram.
Ayya also delivered goods to the military camp in Chennai after he met the Mess Secretary McGregor.

Ayya’s famous slogan

“Intha ulagathilayae, Ore Oru Jathi than; Ore oru matham than; Ore oru Theivam than”

“In this world, there is only one caste, only one religion, only one GOD”

Ayya taught ChttampiSwamikal, the secret mantra of lord Balasubramanyan on a Chitra Pournami. On the next day, he taught the same mantra to Sri Narayana Guru
People close to Ayya have even seen him entering the state of Nirvikalpa Samadhi (Eternal Bliss). He had the power for astral travel, the power to travel to the inner
