Kerala Tourism bagged PATA Award for Muziris Heritage Project


The Kerala Tourism has won this year’s Pacific Asia Travel Association Award in the Heritage & Culture for its Muziris Heritage Project. PATA is a membership association working to promote the responsible development of travel and tourism in the Asia Pacific region. This award is supported and sponsored by the Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) and given annually , this year award recognizes the achievements of 25 separate organizations and individuals.

WHAT IS MUZIRIS?
1) Historically mentioned in the Sangam literature and a number of classical European historical sources it was a major centre of trade port located in present day Pattanam, Kerala.
2) Evidences of trade with Romans, Alexandria ,Persia and Arabia has been found here.
3) It is believed to be setup during Iron age and trade with Romans flourished during 1 to 4th BC.
4) Chera coins, pottery, Frankincense (Aromatic gum), gold filament and semi-precious stones have been unearthed.
5) Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) technique was used to map the surface of Muziris port by the historians.



MUZIRIS HERITAGE PROJECT
1) Objective: Was started by Tourism Department of Kerala in order to restore the historical and cultural significance of Muziris in 2006.Its objectives are to increase the awareness ,conservation, restoration and to integrate heritage management for mutual synergy.
2) Features: It’s the largest heritage conservational project in India and the first green project by Govt. of Kerala. Local involvement,integration in data collection and survey is one of its unique aspects.
