ALL INDIA COUNCIL OF SPORTS

The Govt. of India has constituted ‘All India Council of Sports’ recently for the sports promotion and development. This council will be an advisory body for the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and its advices will not be binding and obligatory on the government. The council may organize national, international conferences, seminars, symposia etc, for promotion of sports and games in the country.

1) Council will be headed by a President in the rank of Minister of State appointed by the Govt.

4) The council will also have representatives from national level sports academies such as SAI, NADA, Indian Olympic association etc.

OBJECTIVES

The council will meet at least once in a quarter to discuss and set new goals and discussing progress of work in the direction of their implementations. Few of the objectives are given as below
1) Popularizing sports amongst the youth as a way of life.
2) Implementation of policies for promotion of sports and games in the country such as including sports compulsorily in the curriculum of schools and universities.
3) Increasing reach of sports to rural and tribal areas, areas affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE), North East and Jammu & Kashmir. Special focus on women, differently abled people and tribals etc
4) Early identification of sports talent and providing opportunities for growth, Welfare measures for sports persons.
5) Preventing drug abuse in sports, fraud of age and sexual harassment of women in sports.
6) Issues arising out of match fixing and other malpractices in competitive sports like in IPL.
7) Providing international level infrastructure to enable sportspersons to practice and prepare better.

CONCLUSION

With the present situation of sportsmen in our country (other than cricket), it is a huge responsibility of the Govt. to encourage new talent at the same time provide enough opportunities of employment  to the retired .Recent incidence of Olympic winner Vijender Singh choosing professional boxing over Govt. representation highlights the difference between the promises and delivery in the sports. An environment needs to be created to naturally attract pool of talent from rural and urban areas. Cases like that of IPL match fixing followed by ban defames the sport and needs to be checked with stringent rules especially in the present scenario when different leagues such as pro kabaddi, hockey india league are on rise to give platform to the newcomers. It would be an achievement if the Govt. is able to address all these issues by All India Council of Sports.
